TIPOLOGI DAN EKSISTENSIP PENDIDIKAN ISLAM PADA ORGANISASI JAMIATUL KHOIR DI INDONESIA
Abstract
This study aims to examine the typology and existence of Islamic education developed by Jamiatul Khoir, one of the oldest Islamic educational institutions in Indonesia. Established in 1905 by the Hadrami Arab community in Batavia, Jamiatul Khoir emerged as a response to the secular and discriminatory Dutch colonial education system. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach through literature review and in-depth interviews. The findings indicate that Jamiatul Khoir represents a modern Islamic educational typology, featuring a structured tiered system, an integrated curriculum combining religious sciences (tafsir, hadith, fiqh, nahwu) and general subjects (mathematics, geography, foreign languages), as well as a classical classroom method. Referring to the theories of Azyumardi Azra and Fazlur Rahman, Jamiatul Khoir is categorized as a modern Islamic institution that responds to contemporary challenges. Its continued existence is supported by innovation, curriculum adaptation, and the use of educational technology. Jamiatul Khoir also played a pivotal role in producing national figures and shaping an Islamic education system that is contextually relevant to Indonesia. This study concludes that Jamiatul Khoir is a model of Islamic education that successfully integrates traditional values with modernity. Future research is encouraged to explore the social and organizational roles of Jamiatul Khoir in society, aspects not fully addressed in this study.
